WINTER TYRES

Why change tyres? When temperatures drop so does the performance of standard tyres, and it’s a fact: UK winters are getting colder. Met Office statistics show for five months in 2010, temperatures dropped below 7°C on average. 7°C is the point at which you should consider switching to winter tyres. Why? Because when the temperature drops below 7°C the tread compound in standard tyres begins to harden – giving you less grip on the road. |
Winter Tyres cope better in these conditions because:
• They contain more natural rubber (to retain flexibility)
• They have specific tread patterns (more suited to Winter road conditions)
• They are designed with SIPES (slits in the tread block to aid traction)
Winter Tyres - How do they work?
There are three main differences between standard tyres and winter tyres:
Tread compound – At 7 degrees and below the tread compound in standard tyres begins to harden and loses grip. Winter tyres however remain flexible and grip better even at low temperatures thanks to a high proportion of natural rubber.
Tread pattern – The tread pattern on a winter tyre is particularly effective on snow and slush. The snow is pressed into the wider grooves, thereby providing additional traction.
Sipes – High number of sipes create a multitude of biting edges that interlock with the wintry surface, thus guaranteeing reliable braking properties and impressive acceleration.
Despite the common misconception that winter tyres are only for use in snow and ice, drivers benefit from using winter tyres below 7 degrees in any conditions, wet or dry. One of the most important things you can do to improve your ŠKODA’s safety and performance during cold weather is to fit winter tyres, giving your ŠKODA a good grip on the winter roads.

Why spend money on winter tyres?
The initial outlay on winter tyres can be offset by the saving on wear to your regular tyres. Winter tyres last as long as regular tyres and depending on your mileage they may even last 2-3 winters - saving wear on your regular tyres and postponing their replacement.
