10 Essential Checks for Spring and Summer Driving

Now spring is on its way, it’s not only your house that will need a spring clean. After months of cold weather, rain, snow and road salt your vehicle will be in desperate need of some TLC before you venture out on long drives and summer adventures. A quick seasonal check can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.

1. Wash away winter dirt

Winter roads leave salt, mud and dirt behind which can lead to rust if left unwashed. Don’t forget to wash the wheels and underside, those hidden spots usually take the hardest hit.

2. Inspect your tyres

Cold temperatures can reduce tyre pressure, so spring is the perfect time to check they’re all at the correct level. While you’re at it, it’s wise to check the tyre depth as well and look for any signs of wear and damage.

3. Refill screen wash

Having good visibility is essential. Spring brings showers, pollen and road spray, so make sure your screen wash is topped up to keep your view clear.

4. Check your wipers

You can’t trust the weather in the UK, so a good set of windscreen wipers are a must to ensure you can see the road clearly. Make sure to check your wipers for any splits in the rubber edge, which could prevent the wiper from clearing water or leave streaks in the line of view.

5. Freshen up the interior

Vacuum your mats, wipe down surfaces, and clear any mud or moisture. A clean car inside and out makes driving safer and more pleasant.

6. Check all of your lights

Before you head off on your holiday, you should test out all of your cars lights to make sure they’re all working correctly. This includes:

  • Car headlights
  • Brake lights
  • Reverse light
  • Indicators

7. Check the oil using your dipstick

If your oil levels are low then your engine can’t lubricate, cool and clean it’s moving parts which is required to ensure your car runs smoothly. If your levels do reach empty then your engine could seize up which will cause you to break down and probably leave you with a heavy repair bill to replace parts.

How to Check Your Engine Oil

  • Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick, usually marked with a yellow or orange ring.
  • Pull the dipstick out of the engine.
  • Wipe it clean using a cloth, rag, or tissue.
  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again.
  • Check that the oil level is between the “min” and “max” markers on the dipstick.
  • If needed, top up with the type of oil recommended in your vehicle’s handbook.

8. Inspect the battery

Cold weather can actually drain your battery. Look out for slow starts, sluggish electronics or warning lights. If your battery shows signs of weakness, it’s safer to replace it now than be stranded somewhere.

9. Check the air con

Whilst this one isn’t vital, traveling on a hot summers day without a functioning air con system can be rather unpleasant. If you haven’t used your air conditioning since last summer then testing it before summer comes around is a smart idea.

10. Examine the windscreen for chips

Rising temperatures can cause chips to expand into cracks. Inspect your windscreen carefully and repair any damage before it worsens.

By following these 10 simple checks, your car will be ready for a safe, smooth, and enjoyable spring and summer. Whether it’s short weekend drives or long holiday journeys, a little seasonal care goes a long way.
