Who can join the scheme?

As long as you receive a qualifying mobility allowance with at least 12 months left and you have a valid UK drivers license then you can join the scheme. This can be for yourself or a nominated driver.

Which type of car suits me best?

Different vehicles suit different people. Choosing the right vehicle depends on your mobility needs, lifestyle, and how you plan to use the vehicle day to day.

If you are a driver who can transfer independently from a wheelchair or mobility aid into a standard seat, a small or medium-sized car with adapted controls may be the most practical option. These vehicles are easier to drive in urban areas, more fuel-efficient, and simpler to park.

If you remain in your wheelchair while travelling, a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) is often the best choice. WAVs are specially adapted so you can enter and travel safely while seated in your wheelchair, using a ramp or lift system. They also provide secure anchoring systems and extra interior space for comfort and safety.
It’s also worth considering how often you travel, whether you need space for carers or family members, and the accessibility of your usual routes. Taking a test drive or speaking with a specialist can help ensure the vehicle you choose matches your day-to-day needs comfortably and confidently.

How do I pay?

Payments are made in a simple and hassle-free way. Your Motability Scheme payments are taken directly from your mobility allowance provider, so you don’t need to worry about managing monthly bills yourself.

In some cases, you may also need to make an Advance Payment. This is a one-off upfront contribution that can be required depending on the make and model of the vehicle you choose, especially for higher-spec cars or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs). Once this is paid, your ongoing lease costs are covered through your regular allowance, keeping everything straightforward and easy to manage.

How do I apply and order?

The process for applying is a straightforward process from start to finish.

Firstly, you’ll need to confirm that you receive a qualifying mobility allowance. Once confirmed, you can have a look at the available vehicles online or visit your local D. M. Keith dealership. We have specialist advisers who will be able to help you weigh up your options and understand what adaptions might be needed.

Once you have chosen your vehicle, we will take care of the ordering process. We will guide you through the process and complete the necessary paperwork and arrange any adaptations if they are required. You might also need to pay an Advanced Payment at this stage depending on the vehicle you have chosen.

After everything has been approved, your vehicle will be prepared and delivered to you. Also, before you drive away you will receive full handover support so you understand how everything works and what’s included in your lease.
